19 arrested for drunken driving

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.

During the week of Jan. 16-22, Big Island police arrested 19 motorists for drunken driving. Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Kohala, 3; South Hilo, 2; Hamakua and North Kohala, 1 each.

So far this year, there have been 77 DUI arrests compared to 85 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.4 percent.

There have been 75 major accidents so far this year compared to 88 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.8 percent.

So far this year, there have been no traffic fatalities on the Big Island compared with three during the same period last year, a decrease of 100 percent.
